This painting was started on location and finished in the studio from memory and my imagination. I love painting skies, especially blue skies with beautiful, colorful clouds. If you add in mountains and a stream, it’s even more interesting to me. What I saw last summer was a sky that looked a little bit like this one but the landscape was uninteresting. So, I made up some distant mountains and a stream that meanders through this beautiful countryside and off into the distance. Who knows where it goes?

Sometimes a painting idea nearly jumps into your lap. Several summers ago, I happened to glance up and see framed perfectly in a window, a reflection of a beautiful summer landscape. It was the backyard of a house in Maine that I used to stay at. I snapped a couple of photos and have been waiting patiently for a time to paint this. Apparently, the time was this past week.

I love this time of year when signs of new life are all around us. I can see hawks in my backyard busily feeding their young high up in a tree while flowering bushes and trees are everywhere I look in my neighborhood. Other birds are busily singing their spring songs which makes for wonderfully cheerful background music as I spend hours grading papers and writing letters of recommendation. Lately, when I walk or run late in the afternoon, I occasionally surprise a small bunny like this one which I can’t help but associate with Easter, though admittedly I’m more likely to think of the chocolate version and not the very adorable live version.

Hidden Away

When I used to visit Maine more regularly, we’d often pass this cove so well-hidden by trees that if you weren’t paying attention, you’d drive past and never even realize it was there. For some reason, places like that fascinate me. They are places that reveal themselves to those looking for them; the ones who pay attention and look for the unexpected. Driving on the only road leading in or out to a distant island, with trees on both sides and knowing there was water just beyond and out of sight, we’d suddenly catch a quick glimpse of one of these small coves, often with boats moored safely away from the worst of Maine’s storms. We all need these safe coves at times; a place to be sheltered and hidden away from the worst of what life throws at us.

Where the Great Heron Feeds

It’s that time of year when I seem to spend far too much of my time evaluating others; my least favorite aspect of teaching. It’s also one of the most beautiful times of year, when I would most like to, as Wendell Berry wrote :

“…go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.”
Ahhhh, maybe sometime soon?
