Today’s painting is based on a walk we took through tall shady trees on a warm summer day in New England. Somewhere to the left there was a meandering stream where, when we were sufficiently warmed by the sun, we could go wading in cool water coming down from the distant mountain.
It was so much fun to paint these warm greens and other summer colors when all I see out the window are greys and browns. How great it is to bring summer just a little closer!

We were traveling down the road when I caught sight of this beautiful sliver of light illuminating a meadow. I quickly shot a photo or two and ended up with a couple of slightly skewed and out of focus shots of this beautiful area. I didn’t realize until I began playing around with these photos, to see if I could see a good composition for a painting that I discovered a bonus: there were two horses and maybe a cow in the meadow. This looks like a wonderful, quiet refuge.

For the last few summers, once the beautiful spring weather has vanished and the heat and humidity of Georgia have arrived, we flee up north to the coast of southern Maine for a brief stay. Here, we enjoy my idea of perfect summer days: cool nights and mornings and long days filled with light. One of the first things I do is to visit the beautiful lilac bush in the back yard and cut a few branches to bring into the house. The whole time we’re there, they fill the kitchen with this sweet fragrance. One day, the light was shining perfectly on this vase and it looked to me like the lilac had struck a graceful pose. It was so much fun to paint this symbol of summer in the middle of winter.

The Lonely Sea

I borrowed today’s painting title from a great poem by John Masefield, called  Sea Fever It just seemed to match the mood of this painting. It starts with such a lyrical phrase: “I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky”.
Imagine the feel of the wind and the salty spray, and the sounds of the gulls crying and the waves crashing on the rocks.  As you look out over the water, you see all the colors of the fading sun.
Masefield’s  poem ends with a wish for: “…And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.”
Wishing you a quiet sleep and sweet dreams.
