I had walked past this tree several times hiking around this island and seen it from the window of my room. Maybe it was smaller than the other trees or maybe it was because I was distracted by the beautiful sea behind it but I hadn’t really paid much attention to it.  And then the sun illuminated it and I saw its beauty. I think sometimes that the most important job of an artist is simply to pay attention.

While working on this painting, as well as while writing this post, I have been on edge since all day we have been receiving news of the progress of our first grandchild’s entry into the world. Like most people in this situation, I just want everything to go well for my daughter-in-law and the baby. At least when you look into the distance in this painting, there are blue skies, signaling happy times. Keep your fingers crossed!

I painted this scene on location in Maine, trying my best to capture the image of these fast-moving clouds scudding across the sky. It was a beautiful, sunny day with cool breezes...something I would love to feel as I run in the already steamy weather of Georgia.
Where is your favorite place to escape as the warm, humid, summer weather rolls in?

Sometimes it’s just nice to be able to catch your breath and appreciate the beauty around you. This is such an evening. Imagine a cool breeze, the sun setting with a beautiful pink glow, and imagine all is well with the world....at least for now.
Wishing you a Happy Weekend and to all the mothers I know, a Happy Mother’s Day!

Looking on the Bright Side

When I was trying to figure out the title of this painting, I first focused on the fog and the growing loss of light, etc. Then I thought, why focus on loss? Focus on what’s present: the beautiful light shining on the cliff side. I want to focus, even when it’s difficult, on the beautiful in my life in the form of my family and dear friends...my wonderful colleagues and students. May we all get through this tough end of the semester, these “gray” days, helping each other remember the beautiful all around us.
            Happy Weekend!
