It was a grey, rainy day when I painted this last weekend. I think subconsciously, I was looking for something to counteract the gloominess of the day when I noticed some photos I’d taken of some enormous, bright sunflowers. I’d placed them on a table near a window where the sun spotlighted the flowers beautifully. These cheerful, yellow sunflowers are to me, the perfect antidote for a rainy day.

Sunsets have this ephemeral beauty that always makes me wish to slow them down.  Since that’s obviously impossible, I try to notice every magnificent aspect of them.  I always fail but the effort is always enjoyable.  The evening of this sunset, I noticed the luminosity of the clouds, the reflections skimming the beach, and a family out enjoying the last walk of the day.

I’ve been watching the progression of blooming trees and shrubs on my walks through my neighborhood. After working long hours, intensely focused on a screen, it’s wonderful to get outside, take deep breaths of fresh air (even if it’s loaded with pollen this time of year), get some exercise, and enjoy the sight of all the soft, fuzzy colors of spring.

I never get over how beautiful the quality of light is in the morning! Of course, I’ll have to admit as much as I love to study this quality of light, I will never, ever become a morning person! However, in the summers, if I have traveled to a place of beauty, it’s so worth it to wake up early just to see the morning light breaking over the water and listen to the gradually increasing chorus of the birds.

I love walking on the beach! I was fortunate to grow up close to the ocean so some of my earliest memories are playing on the beach, hearing the adults discuss the news of the day, including one morning, the latest shark attack. Surprisingly, even though I remember that as scary, I don’t remember it dimming my enthusiasm for playing in the ocean at all.

I shared a love with my sister, Meg, of walking the beach looking for beautiful or unusual shells in spite of the fact that both of us have always had more than enough shells already. For me, the beach is a perfect place to relax, to think, and just to appreciate the beauty of nature.
