We’ll be visiting this area again in a couple of weeks and I can’t wait! When I see the colors of the reference photos I used for this painting, I always think of fall but this is the marsh in March, close to sunset. I love the way the setting sun makes the marsh glow with warmth; a nice contrast to the many grey and dreary days we’ve been experiencing lately.
Hope your weekend is full of warmth and light!

We were on a search for whales, in rough seas with cold, brisk, winds and I was of course, loving every minute. It was a typical boat ride on a June day in Maine. About half of the people were down below deck, seasick but I was on top searching the horizon for whales. We never saw any that day but we did see a variety of birds, seals, and this really cool lightkeeper’s house on the coast.
            Happy Weekend!

A Place Worth Saving

“A Place Worth Saving”        Pastel       7” x 9”      $70        © Sharon Lewis

I have to admit that when I was growing up, I thought places like this were where you went to get up close and personal with snakes and alligators, not something I was eager to do. But because I’ve long been interested in preserving the natural environment, I’ve learned the value of wetlands in that they harbor countless species of fish, birds, and other wildlife. They offer protection from storms, and reduce flooding and erosion.  In addition, given the influence of my friend and gifted artist, Karen Margulis, I now see the great beauty in wetlands.
Hope there’s beauty in your weekend!

It was raining and dark when I painted this last weekend, on a day pretty much like today. I decided that bright red would be a good antidote for the darkness outside my window and I chose to paint on a relatively new, almost black surface made for pastel artists that I’ve been wanting to try. The dark surface makes the tulips almost jump out of the background.
Happy Almost Weekend!
