            I decided to post this particular painting today because it seems to represent both the challenges that I see my students and colleagues trying to weather this time of year as well as the political news over the past week.  Fortunately, these challenges whether academic or political, will pass in time.

            I love painting sailboats, the ocean, and a big sky full of interesting clouds! Sometimes, I get lucky and get to paint a scene with all three elements. This is what I saw when I was home in southern Florida recently. The water was a gorgeous color with dark turquoise blue further out and a wonderful greenish-blue closer to shore. The sky was full of these big clouds that arranged themselves into an interesting pattern and to top it all off, a striking sailboat with its sails catching the light as well as the wind.

            I went home to southern Florida recently to visit family and friends and in between seeing people I love, I took some time to do what I love which is to walk on the beach of my childhood. Every time I was troubled or needed to think things through I came to the beach to walk by the water. The ocean manages to stay the same while always changing. It can be calming with the rhythmic ebb and flow of the waves or exciting as it mirrors the ferocity of faraway storms. No matter what, it never fails to enchant me and make me feel so fortunate to have grown up near this fascinating body of water.

            It was a super windy day on the west coast when we saw these kite-flyers on the beach.  The gusts of wind kept threatening to send the kites into the water or dash them on the rocks but they persisted and reminded us all of the joy of watching a kite fly with the wind.
