It was for me, an ideal summer day. There was sunshine, a cool breeze, beautiful clouds in a blue sky, and I had enough time to paint this gorgeous view. I could have painted (and did) for hours, until it was time to celebrate the end of this wonderful summer day, enjoying a glass of wine and watching the sun set.

One of the things I loved most about traveling with my kids when they were younger was sharing with them the wonders of the natural world. I wanted them to learn a reverence and love for the environment and their unabashed excitement made it all the more fun for me.

Dawn comes early in Maine, at least in the summertime. I was lucky one morning to wake up early enough to capture the beauty of that time right before sunrise, when the sky is various shades of peach, and purple, and pink, and it’s oh so very quiet and peaceful.
Apologies to David Mann and Bob Hilliard for borrowing the title of their song (which I love) for this painting.

When the Water’s Away, the People Will Play

When the tide goes out in the Mt. Desert Narrows in Bar Harbor, a long sandbar is temporarily exposed which people quickly take advantage of. There’s something cool about walking along this long, narrow stretch of sand, exploring what the tide’s left behind. It’s also a bit exciting in that if you get too caught up in exploring the island and ignore the incoming tide you will find yourself stranded for hours, waiting for the next tide to recede.

When I was in Maine recently, I was so lucky to have sunny, mild weather and to have a beautiful view of the Mt. Desert Narrows, a waterway which is dotted with small islands. I painted several paintings facing different directions, in between walking, hiking, and running along the water here in Bar Harbor. Oh, how I would love to still be there with the sounds, smells, and views of the ocean!
