So many of us love to walk on a beach and I’m certainly one of them. I find however, that I like it best when I’m not distracted by a ton of people; when I can walk at sunset and listen to the rhythmic sound of the sea, watch the tiny sea birds grabbing dinner while dodging the waves, and enjoy the beauty of the sky unfolding before me. What’s your favorite time to be on the beach?

Hope there’s a beach in your future and have a Happy Weekend!

In the Lee

SOLD

I saw this family at the beach recently and it looked to me like they’d found just the right place to play, sheltered from the wind in the lee of a hill and a large mass of beach grass. With so much sadness in the news lately it made me happy to focus on this small family group. It reminds me of idyllic days spent at the beach with my young son and daughter, when their most important concerns were building sandcastles, looking for shells, and chasing the poor sea gulls. I wish that all children could feel this sheltered.

The Wonder of Discovery

“The Wonder of Discovery”            5” x 7”          Pastel         $50         © Sharon Lewis

SOLD

I took a few, much-needed days off recently and visited the beautiful, South Carolina coast. It’s early in the season with the water too cold for swimming but it’s a perfect time to walk on the beach searching for yet more sea shells (some might say I have way too many already). Having grown up on the Florida coast and spending my childhood at the beach I remember exploring what the water left behind with such wonder…at the shells, the tiny crabs, the sea glass; everything was an exciting discovery to a young child…and I’ll admit, still is for this much older adult.

Early Evening in the Wetlands

One of my favorite coastal areas to visit is the Isle of Palms, a narrow barrier island near Charleston, SC. It’s driving distance from Atlanta so it’s great for short getaways and walking the beach there I’ll see far more birds than people this time of year. On the way to Isle of Palms, I pass beautiful wetlands, filled with a variety of birds. This is a painting of these wetlands in the early evening, with the setting sun just kissing the water with the last light.

            Happy Weekend!
