New England Refuge

It’s been raining here almost nonstop for days and so it was a relief to focus on a painting of a perfect sunny, summer day spent up north. We had gotten a little warm while we were hiking when we luckily discovered this perfect stream hidden in the woods. We soon were wading in and cooling off in an idyllic, restful spot. The only sounds heard were that of the birds in the trees up above and the water running over the rocks, in my mind, the perfect refuge.

For some reason, I got it into my head that I wanted to paint Gumby and Pokey, something from my childhood, long, long ago. It’s been fun and funny to paint a subject like this that symbolizes the imagination and innocence of children; a time when anything was possible and the good creatures always won. I’ve found myself laughing as I painted these two figures and am already planning future paintings as I am now the proud owner of a whole clan of Gumbys! Stay tuned for more in the Gumby, Pokey series.
Hope you find an opportunity for imagination and laughter this weekend!

I’m on my way to see my “baby” daughter graduate from Northwestern University Law School and I’m so proud of her! I’m also so excited because I will see both of my children on Mother’s Day for the first time in years!
I’m wishing all the mothers that I know, a restful, relaxing weekend and a very Happy Mother’s Day!

Little did I know when I selected this painting to post this week, that it would be storming today in Georgia. This painting is of a place I love visiting each year called Bailey Island, ME. I can stand in the back yard there and paint quick studies of cloud formations that gather and then dissipate. Can’t wait to visit and paint there again!
Hoping you enjoy beautiful weather and a Happy Weekend!
