The Scenic Route

I don’t usually run while on vacation, preferring to hike or walk instead. After all, this is a time for relaxing, right? But I found a great path with such beautiful scenery that I couldn’t resist running along the water here several times. The water of course is gorgeous but the rocks are also fascinating. There are so many different colors and textures on Maine's rocky shores that I never get tired of painting them.

When the Water’s Away, the People Will Play

When the tide goes out in the Mt. Desert Narrows in Bar Harbor, a long sandbar is temporarily exposed which people quickly take advantage of. There’s something cool about walking along this long, narrow stretch of sand, exploring what the tide’s left behind. It’s also a bit exciting in that if you get too caught up in exploring the island and ignore the incoming tide you will find yourself stranded for hours, waiting for the next tide to recede.

What I Could See

When I was in Maine recently, I was so lucky to have sunny, mild weather and to have a beautiful view of the Mt. Desert Narrows, a waterway which is dotted with small islands. I painted several paintings facing different directions, in between walking, hiking, and running along the water here in Bar Harbor. Oh, how I would love to still be there with the sounds, smells, and views of the ocean!

Imagining

Imagine that instead of hearing the sounds of angry people clashing with one another, you hear instead the call of gulls, the sound of waves ebbing and flowing, the wind singing through the trees. Imagine instead of seeing in the news descriptions of conflicts between people and nations you see instead, how the sun illuminates the rocks and the ocean revealing all the beautiful colors contained within.

We’ve had summer weather all week so maybe that explains why I’ve been drawn to painting a place that can be sunny but is often cool even in the summer. I love Maine in the summer!
Here’s hoping that Maine sends us some cool temps this weekend!

Blue Skies Return

The blue skies have returned and the sun is slowly drying up the muddy, saturated ground. There are signs everywhere that strong tropical storm winds moved through here and left the trees with some drastic haircuts. Family members, friends, and neighbors are reaching out to check on one another. Those who lost little are reaching out to share with those who lost so much. It’s a good time to remember our shared humanity and to be grateful for kindness and generosity.
