            On the west coast of Scotland, is a beautiful sea loch (does Scotland have any ugly lochs?), called Loch Linnhe. About 31 miles long, the loch follows the Great Glen Fault and opens onto the Firth of Lorne (I love Scotland’s place names!). I’ve painted the gorgeous sunsets along here before and decided it was time to paint a sunny afternoon.

            Something about the rhythm of the waves rolling in and back out again can be comforting. When we get distressed, our breathing becomes more shallow and rapid. When we stop and listen to the rhythms of nature like the rise and fall of the waves, our breathing slows and we calm down. I’m grateful for the sounds of nature like this, as well as the joyful sounds of spring I hear from all the birds outside my window.

            Sometimes what I like most about being on the lookout for painting ideas is that you see something beautiful in a simple scene. The day was cloudy and a bit gray and we had come to the end of the island where there was marshland. It wasn’t a traditionally beautiful beach scene and yet there was something beautifully serene about the absence of an obvious human presence in our surroundings.

             This is where I hope to be in a few days. The beach will not be warm but it does not matter. It will be relaxing and there will be wine, walks, and the water.

I will be able to hear the sound of the waves rolling into shore, the sea birds calling, and the music of the wind. I cannot wait!

           We were hiking last summer through a beautiful valley that had such wonderful patterns of light and shadow falling on velvety green hills….and for once it wasn’t raining. You don’t get such wonderful greens everywhere in the middle of summer without lots of rain.  Stopping to admire the view, I caught a glimpse far beyond of a lovely lake. There was no time to explore it but maybe next time?
