The Colors of the Season

On these bitter cold, now winter days, when the vibrant colors of fall have faded, I’m warmed by the sight of red flowers and green leaves. I was fortunate to be able to paint a small study of these beautiful flowers when staying on the west coast several years ago.  They didn’t look exactly like this (nature rarely arranges her flowers in perfect compositions) but with my photos and small study I was able to create this painting.

I hope you’re warmed by the company of those you love this weekend. To all who celebrate Christmas, Merry Christmas Weekend!

Tranquil Once Again

With the end of the semester bringing lots of work to complete and deadlines to meet for my students, colleagues, and me, I find myself drawn to painting peaceful, tranquil scenes. This beautiful lake and the colorful fall trees reflecting on it are a stark contrast to the way I’ve felt the last several weeks. But, like the beautiful colors of autumn, the crazy deadlines will pass, the work will get done, and all will become tranquil once again.

The Warmth of Autumn

As the days get noticeably shorter, I find myself appreciating all the more, the warmth of the fall colors still visible out my window. I incorporated many of the colors that I see in my backyard in this painting. Although I know this won’t last much longer, it is enough for now to be able to still enjoy the rich, vibrant colors of fall on this grey November day.

Happy Weekend!

Holding Each Other Up

I really enjoy painting organic, somewhat rounded shapes like pumpkins. I’m not sure if it’s because their irregular shapes are fun to paint or because I get to paint using different shades of orange which I only rarely use in landscapes. I think it’s also because painting pumpkins allows me to depict more serious subjects like the idea of supporting one another or accepting that we come in different shapes and sizes and that’s OK.

It’s always fun to watch the sunset when you’re at the beach but I think it’s even more enjoyable when you share that joy with others. It was late afternoon, and individuals of all ages, just stopped to admire the beautiful sky in front of them. The sun was setting behind them and reflecting gorgeous colors into the clouds over the sea. There’s nothing like sharing the joy of beauty in nature with others. It’s a wonderful connection!

I love to sleep in in the morning and I love the colors of a beautiful sunrise. These two things are incompatible but I make it work. I’m fine with getting up around 4:30am to capture photos of a sunrise in a beautiful location and then go back to sleep with the sounds of happy birds rejoicing in another spectacular start to a summer morning.

Happy Weekend and may all your mornings be spectacular!

While I was visiting a cool place this summer in Newfoundland that I’d hiked several times, I was searching for new vista when I stumbled across this beautiful cove. I couldn’t get over the striking color of the water and how the rock formations reminded me of a sleeping dragon or some strange, giant bird. What do you see when you look at this?

Sunset Music

I’m posting a painting I made a few years ago of the beautiful island of Newfoundland, Canada. I visited this area many years ago and always wanted to go back. If you’re looking for a wonderful respite from the hot and humid temperatures of Georgia, this is the place to go!

It had been a stormy afternoon, segueing into a cool evening. As evening fell, the storm clouds moved out rapidly leaving behind this dazzling glimpse of the last rays of the setting sun. The tide had gone out, leaving pools of shimmering water in its wake. What a beautiful end to the day!

This time of year, Maine is a wonderful place to be. The month of June is usually mild with cool mornings, and there are sunrises worth getting up absurdly early for, since they often involve a gorgeous explosion of color like this.

I’m on my way to our nation’s capital to attend a conference and see family. Coincidentally, I ran across some of my DC reference photos, taken from an Uber careening through traffic. In spite of having a hard time keeping my balance, I managed to capture this tranquil scene with geese flying from one historic monument to another.

Happy Easter!

“Mad About Tulips”          Oil        10” x 8”          $100   © Sharon Lewis

I love this time of year when signs of new life are all around us. There are the beautifully flowering trees like the dogwoods as well as the very old apple tree in my front yard, still delighting me with its pink, fragrant blossoms.  Then there are the flowers blooming in neighbor’s yards while mine have long ago been eaten by all the deer. And I can’t forget the birds, singing their cheerful spring songs as I spend hours grading good but very long papers.

To all my friends who celebrate Passover, Happy Passover! To family and friends who celebrate Easter, Happy Easter!

I’ve been so excited about the thought of returning to the beach in a few days. I grew up near the water and have always loved falling asleep listening to the rhythmic sounds of the waves. I can’t wait to collect more seashells I don’t need and add hundreds more photos of the ocean to my current way-too-large collection. It never gets old!

I love to climb high and have since I was little. I also get a little dizzy looking down but can’t resist doing this when I’m climbing near the water. I find it scary but usually worth the risk since the view is often beautiful like in this scene. I love the many colors I could see in the water and the mix of big, almost violent waves with areas of calm water.

We’ve had more rain and grey skies this week, leaving me longing for a glimpse of blue skies and sun. So, of course I manufactured the sky I was hoping to see this week and for a brief period of time, I was in this landscape, remembering the smell of freshly cut grass, the sounds of birds, and the distant lowing of cows.

Hope your skies are sunny. Happy Weekend!

It’s Thanksgiving this coming week and as my students and I scatter over hills and maybe through some woods, I am feeling so grateful for all my kind, loving, and thoughtful friends and family. My life is so much richer and happier for your presence!

I hope that wherever you are this Thanksgiving, that you are gathered with love to celebrate this holiday of gratitude.

May you feel the warmth of all those who love you this Thanksgiving.

Happy Weekend!

Oxford in the Fall

I’ve spent many, long hours in my office lately but I feel very fortunate that I have this view of the beautiful Oxford College campus. When I first came to Emory University’s Oxford campus long ago, I was struck by the natural beauty of the quad which had quite a few huge trees with massive canopies. Unfortunately, we’ve lost some of those older trees due to storms over the years but we still have quite a few striking trees throughout the campus. There’s something wonderful, after hours of meetings and grading, to look up and see the sun set this tree ablaze with glorious colors. I’m so grateful for this view.

In the Deep Fall

I love the poem by Mary Oliver, “In the Deep Fall” from which I borrowed the title of this painting. She writes:

Don’t you imagine the leaves think how
comfortable it will be to touch
the earth instead of the
nothingness of air and the endless
freshets of wind? And don’t you think
the trees themselves, especially those with mossy,
warm caves, begin to think

of the birds that will come — six, a dozen — to sleep
inside their bodies? And don’t you hear
the goldenrod whispering goodbye,
the everlasting being crowned with the first
tuffets of snow? The pond
vanishes, and the white field over which
the fox runs so quickly brings out
its blue shadows. And the wind pumps its
bellows. And at evening especially,
the piled firewood shifts a little,
longing to be on its way.
