It was Shakespeare who wrote “All That Glitters is not Gold” (The Merchant of Venice) cautioning us not to treat everything that glitters as if it was valuable. However, I think that the glittery, colorful, shiny ornaments that we hang on Christmas trees may be valuable in reminding us in these days of short days and long nights that the light and warmth will return.

I love painting trees that you find along coasts! They have weathered strong winds and rains and still remain standing. They bend with the forces confronting them but often don’t break….something I’ve been thinking may be a good approach to life. Sometimes a small change of direction is all that’s necessary for us to thrive.

This is an excerpt from a poem by John Koethe (1945) which seems to capture in words my feelings when I painting this scene. It’s based on my photos of New Brunswick on a beautiful summer day, in the Atlantic Provinces of Canada.

            There’s something so mesmerizing about the ebb and flow of waves. The sound of the waves, as they build and then gradually crash on the shore, can lull you into a relaxing stupor. As an additional treat, if you’re patient and wait until the sun is setting, the light can make them glow with all the colors of the rainbow. I just love painting waves!
