My Backyard

“My Backyard”     7 x 5     Oil    $ 105    © Sharon Lewis

It has finally become more fall-like and even the mosquitoes don’t seem to be around as much so I’ve been painting outdoors from time to time. I always find this challenging in that I have to figure out how to simplify what seems to be just a huge mass of different greens competing for my attention. But it’s also all beautiful and I’m so grateful for the good weather and the opportunity to be outdoors doing something I love doing.

            Happy Weekend!

Fruits of Summer

As my free time increases somewhat, I’ve been eager to get back to painting in oils. I’m not as familiar with this medium as I am with pastels, so painting with this medium is a voyage of discovery – often one involving trial and lots of errors. However, I love being able to mix hundreds of different colors from a handful of tubes of paint and the challenge of creating the strokes and marks I want with brushes instead of sticks of solid pigment (pastels). It’s so much fun to have to time to try something different!

The Start of Summer!

Friday is the summer solstice and the official start of summer. Summer to me means, the gift of time, fireflies, bird song, the chance to read many, many novels, and the opportunity to escape to the ocean.

Return of the Sun

It’s been raining every day here in the Atlanta area for what feels like weeks. As a result I’m especially drawn to any of my reference photos that show sunlight. In this painting, I wanted to indicate some dreary rain clouds moving off in the distance and some sun (finally) shining through the trees and illuminating some of the rocks.

Quiet Beauty

One of the things that I’m looking forward to as I transition into retirement from my day job, is more opportunities to paint outside. This small painting is of a view I had on Orcas Island, one of the beautiful San Juan Islands in the state of Washington. One of the benefits of painting plein air that I’ve learned, is that it encourages me to focus on the quiet beauty in a landscape – not the flashier or more striking, but the beauty others might dismiss as too ordinary or uninteresting. The challenge for me is to slow down, become more aware and truly see what beauty lies in front of me.

Among the Trees

Today’s painting title is borrowed from the poem, When I am Among the Trees, by Mary Oliver, a poet I am grateful I found thanks to friends who shared her works with me.

Trying to summarize the sentiments expressed in this poem doesn’t do it justice, so for all who need a bit of comfort nowadays, here is the poem:

When I am Among the Trees – Mary Oliver

“When I am among the trees,

especially the willows and the honey locust,

equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,

they give off such hints of gladness.

I would almost say that they save me, and daily.

I am so distant from the hope of myself,

in which I have goodness, and discernment,

and never hurry through the world

but walk slowly, and bow often.

Around me the trees stir in their leaves

and call out, ‘Stay awhile.’

The light flows from their branches.

And they call again, ‘It’s simple,’ they say,

‘and you too have come

into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled

with light, and to shine.”

Happy Weekend and go easy, be filled with light, and shine!

On a Summer Day

It’s that time of year when I can finally slow down a bit and catch my breath.  I can take the time to listen to the sweet sound of birds calling to one another through the trees, the funny sounds of squirrels scolding  one another, or the stream traveling over the worn rocks below. I can see all the different lush greens of summer in the trees contrasting with the red cardinals or the blue of the titmouse, or the orangish-red of the finches. All of this makes for a wonderful summer day.

One of my favorite poems that I love to read when I’m feeling tired and a bit overwhelmed is “The  Peace of Wild Things” by Wendell Perry. No matter how many times I read this poem, the imagery within always soothes me. I love the lines:

“I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, ……I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light.”

As Perry used his words, I have used paint, to hopefully create a refuge that within you can find peace.

As I finished my walk in a local park recently, the sun was just setting.  For a few brief moments, this nearly bare tree was attired in mauve while there was a beautiful glow on the lake, reminding me that even in winter, nature can surely put on a show!

Several years ago, I was able to get away to the mountains in the fall. You never know when exactly the trees will hit their peak of color or if you’ll have missed it all together. But that year, we caught nature’s Autumn exhibition in all it’s glory. It was beautiful! I was also lucky enough to catch these ducks landing in the lake to rest, eat, and enjoy the show like the rest of us.

I’m going to an Arts Exhibition opening this week where both artists and art patrons will be mingling. Since I have two of my paintings included in this exhibition, I always like to think about what to tell people if they ask me about my art in general. This painting is an example of what I love capturing in my art: light and color in nature. This is a park where I love to walk and was lucky enough to catch the sun just as it set this tree glowing with all the warmth and color we associate with Autumn.

On Orcas Island, which is part of the San Juan islands off the coast of Washington state, you can see beautiful views like this. You can also walk through old growth forest or hike up to Mount Constitution which gives you a spectacular view of the surrounding islands and waterways. There were cool breezes and sunny days…my ideal summer day.

Sometimes a painting idea nearly jumps into your lap. Several summers ago, I happened to glance up and see framed perfectly in a window, a reflection of a beautiful summer landscape. It was the backyard of a house in Maine that I used to stay at. I snapped a couple of photos and have been waiting patiently for a time to paint this. Apparently, the time was this past week.

Another cold, grey, winter day but fortunately for me, I can paint a sunny summer one.  I’ve always loved trees like this that stand on a hillside, catching the light, and serving as a source of beauty for all who pass by.
Hope you see some beauty in your life this weekend.

I love trees like this! They stand on a hillside, buffeted by the winds...bending with the storms they’ve endured but never completely overcome by them. They stand with such strength and grace...like many of the people I most admire.

When I saw these two trees, I couldn’t get over how they seemed to be reaching their branches toward one another, drawn to each other but not able to actually touch. They’re like good friends or lovers, separated by distance but still trying to communicate.

Illumination

I had walked past this tree several times hiking around this island and seen it from the window of my room. Maybe it was smaller than the other trees or maybe it was because I was distracted by the beautiful sea behind it but I hadn’t really paid much attention to it.  And then the sun illuminated it and I saw its beauty. I think sometimes that the most important job of an artist is simply to pay attention.
