            This is actually my last painting of 2018, just posted a little late. My Christmas tree is still up, though coming down tomorrow and I have to admit I will miss the colored lights, the beautiful ornaments, and the wonderful smell of a blue spruce tree. I’m always slow to get the tree up and decorated but I’d happily keep it up until February. So, this is probably the last of my winter or holiday scenes until next year.

                       I discovered after doing some quick online research, that one of the names of the poinsettia is “winter rose” which seems to be a perfect name for this brightly colored plant whose leaves turn red in winter. It’s also a symbol of joy and hope and love, three wonderful things to be reminded of on this, the longest night of the year.

It was Shakespeare who wrote “All That Glitters is not Gold” (The Merchant of Venice) cautioning us not to treat everything that glitters as if it was valuable. However, I think that the glittery, colorful, shiny ornaments that we hang on Christmas trees may be valuable in reminding us in these days of short days and long nights that the light and warmth will return.
