Winter Rose
I
discovered after doing some quick online research, that one of the names of the
poinsettia is “winter rose” which seems to be a perfect name for this brightly
colored plant whose leaves turn red in winter. It’s also a symbol of joy and
hope and love, three wonderful things to be reminded of on this, the longest
night of the year.

Storm-Tossed
Sometimes,
in spite of our best efforts, our lives can feel
like we’re floundering in storm-tossed seas. I’ve seen this recently in some of
my hard-working students. They’re dealing with the stress of final exams and
papers and projects due, and then a friend has a crisis. These kind students
drop everything to help and then find themselves overwhelmed with the
additional stress. Sometimes, we may be hardy souls, strong and courageous, but
we flounder and it is then that a lifeline tossed by friends, family, or a
mentor can make a difference. During these long, dark nights of winter, look
out for those floundering and toss them a lifeline in the form of a hug, smile,
or encouraging words.

One of My Favorite Things

One of
my favorite things is this view that I’ve painted so often on location in Maine. I
can remember the beautiful day that I painted this. It was a sunny day, with a
cool breeze, and huge clouds had scudded by leaving only these wispier ones remaining.
This is a wonderful summer location from which to paint and one that I’m happy
not to be visiting on this cold December day in the south.
I hope you
get an opportunity to enjoy some of your favorite things this weekend.

Looking for Light
“Looking for Light” Pastel
7” x 5” $50 © Sharon Lewis Click Here to Purchase |
It’s that
time of year when it feels like darkness lasts far too long and periods of
light are getting shorter and shorter. I think that’s why I was drawn to paint
this scene from one of my trips. I was hiking through fairly dark woods but
found a gap in the trees where I could see this light-filled meadow alongside a
beautiful lake.
Hope your weekend is filled with light!

Another
grey day in Georgia has me wishing I was somewhere, anywhere, where the sun is
shining so I painted a sunny day at the beach....where people are relaxed and
happy and there are no papers or exams to grade. I can hear the waves and the
sea gulls calling me.
I hope
wherever you are, you enjoy a Happy Weekend!

Welcome Color
Fall has come a little later than usual to the southeast.
This luckily allowed us to still enjoy beautiful colors in the mountains even
though we weren’t able to get away until late October. I could look out and
paint these dazzling trees ablaze with fall colors; a welcome sight on a cold,
wet, dreary day.

Autumn Beauties
I love
apples in the fall! I don’t seem to eat them much during the rest of the year
but autumn is when they taste so delicious! And on a cold, gray, and rainy day,
I found the reds and oranges in these apples so warm and inviting that I had to
paint them.....especially before I forgot and ate them all!

We're All Pumpkins!
Given that
Halloween is coming up soon, I was drawn to paint pumpkins this week. As I
sorted through my reference photos, with the news on in the background, I kept
hearing about all of the conflicts between humans. I couldn’t help but think of
how pumpkins come in all different sizes and several different colors....like
us. I imagined these pumpkins saying to the viewer, “Hey, we’re all
pumpkins”!

It Tastes Better Here
I’ve always
been drawn to rolling green hills, quiet meadows and trees, and if there’s a body
of water, then that’s just a bonus. These are some of the quintessential
elements defining a pastoral scene and as a landscape artist, it shouldn’t be a
surprise that I love painting them. On this day, a lone cow wandered away from
the rest of the herd and seemed to prefer the grass over here or maybe it was
the view.

You’re Late!
Sometimes
you have one idea for a painting with even a title in mind but your painting
has other ideas. I had in mind a title which included the word harvest, but I
couldn’t help but think this looks like two apples and one peach and then I
pictured the apples kind of scolding the peach for waiting so long to grow and
mature. Maybe it’s the news influencing my perspective?

Cove at Ecola
Ecola State
Park is a beautiful area with picnic tables high on a bluff overlooking this
cove. It’s also a great place to hike through tall, cool woods, or spend a
couple of hours on a gorgeous beach. We were so lucky that we got beautiful,
sunny, cool weather for our picnic and hike here.

The View From Orcas
“The View From Orcas” Pastel 5” x 7”
$50 © Sharon Lewis Click Here to Purchase |
I remember this view so vividly. We
were staying on Orcas Island, part of the San Juan Islands off the coast of
Washington. I painted this from a hillside overlooking the water with a
wonderful view of a harbor and distant islands. During the day, there were
sailboats, motor boats, kayakers, and sea planes going back and forth in this busy
harbor. However, I decided to paint it without all the busyness, and instead, as
it might have appeared long, long ago; as calm and peaceful with only nature in
sight.

The Last One
The truth
is that plein air painting intimidates me a bit. I love the outdoors but
painting on location brings a lot of challenges: bugs, strong winds, blinding sun
in your eyes, and curious strangers who apparently feel that you’re there to
provide them with entertainment. However, I also have to admit, once I get
started painting, I don’t want to stop and often don’t until the light is gone
or we need to be somewhere else. This painting was the last painting in a
beautiful location and is partially made up. I wanted to paint these bushes in
the fading light but I didn’t like the composition in front of me so I “rearranged” the bushes
into a design that worked a little better.

When Rocks Gossip
“When
Rocks Gossip” Pastel 11” x 14” $150
© Sharon Lewis Click Here to Purchase |
Like
many artists, I sometimes struggle to come up with a title for my painting. I’ve
tried turning to poetry, to puns or plays on words, or even using the location
name as part of or the whole title. In this case, I couldn’t get away from
imagining these rocks as individuals gathering together to hear some particularly
interesting bit of gossip. What do you see?

Emerald Waters
|
I’m
always fascinated by how the color of the sea changes in sometimes subtle and
sometimes dramatic fashion, depending on where you are. In this area of the coast,
so often the sea appeared almost an emerald green, with the sand varying
between a warm peach and a cool pink. The contrast between the water and the
beach was so beautiful! I also love the lighthouse just visible at the end
of this strip of land.

Fog's Coming!
|
I loved painting this scene from our
recent trip to the west coast. The sea here was roiling and full of foam. I
expected to find the fog the least interesting thing to paint but as I studied
my photos, I realized that the fog actually had many beautiful colors in it
especially where it thinned out and the blue sky could be seen through it. It
was a lovely, cool day, and so perfect for walking on the beach.
Happy Weekend!
