Today is a beautiful fall day – sunny, breezy, and cool. I would love to have days like this for weeks! Instead, I see the weather forecast is for the low 80’s next week. In spite of the unseasonably warm weather, the leaves are changing signaling fall is here. Last year around this time, I was in this lovely park in Virginia, hiking with my kids. The leaves were not quite this colorful, but I used a little artistic license to adorn them with rich autumn colors.

It’s fun to escape your everyday views from time to time. I love exploring new landscapes and this is a place that my son discovered for all of us to hike over Thanksgiving weekend. Fortunately, the trees hadn’t lost all their leaves and we were treated to some beautiful colors and scenery.

It’s Thanksgiving this week and as my students and I scatter over hills and maybe through some woods, I am feeling grateful for all my kind, loving, and thoughtful friends and family. My life is so much richer and happier for your presence!

I hope that wherever you are this Thanksgiving, that you are gathered with love to celebrate this holiday of gratitude.

May you feel the warmth of all those who love you this Thanksgiving!

The trees where I live are almost bare now and I find myself longing for color in the landscape. Fortunately, I have lots of inspiration in my photographs of fall. This painting is based on photos taken during a weekend in the north Georgia mountains during peak apple season. I had a hard time deciding whether to feature the beautiful fall colors in the mountains or the gorgeous colors of the apples, so, I included both.

While I don’t enjoy the shorter days of this time of year, I do appreciate that I seem to catch more sunsets. This is a sunset I caught one fall, while visiting a place in New Jersey called Crow Creek Farm, now known as the Sperlak Gallery and Sculpture Gardens. This beautiful place is run by the talented landscape artist, Stan Sperlak and is a wonderful mixture of woods, meadows, and marsh. I was fortunate to see the setting sun set the distant woods glowing while clouds performed acrobatics above.

Tranquil Once Again

With the end of the semester bringing lots of work to complete and deadlines to meet for my students, colleagues, and me, I find myself drawn to painting peaceful, tranquil scenes. This beautiful lake and the colorful fall trees reflecting on it are a stark contrast to the way I’ve felt the last several weeks. But, like the beautiful colors of autumn, the crazy deadlines will pass, the work will get done, and all will become tranquil once again.

The Warmth of Autumn

As the days get noticeably shorter, I find myself appreciating all the more, the warmth of the fall colors still visible out my window. I incorporated many of the colors that I see in my backyard in this painting. Although I know this won’t last much longer, it is enough for now to be able to still enjoy the rich, vibrant colors of fall on this grey November day.

I really enjoy painting organic, somewhat rounded shapes like pumpkins. I’m not sure if it’s because their irregular shapes are fun to paint or because I get to paint using different shades of orange which I only rarely use in landscapes. I think it’s also because painting pumpkins allows me to depict more serious subjects like the idea of supporting one another or accepting that we come in different shapes and sizes and that’s OK.

For someone who loves a riot of color in the landscape. I’m in heaven during the fall and spring. Lately, I’ve been noticing so many trees that have taken on the stunning, vibrant cloak of fall. It makes my drive to and from work a visual delight and possibly hazardous as it’s hard for me not to focus on the beautiful scarlet, orange, and sunny yellow foliage. I love all these colors but I wonder if they are all the more precious because I know they are so briefly present.

As I finished my walk in a local park recently, the sun was just setting.  For a few brief moments, this nearly bare tree was attired in mauve while there was a beautiful glow on the lake, reminding me that even in winter, nature can surely put on a show!

Several years ago, I was able to get away to the mountains in the fall. You never know when exactly the trees will hit their peak of color or if you’ll have missed it all together. But that year, we caught nature’s Autumn exhibition in all it’s glory. It was beautiful! I was also lucky enough to catch these ducks landing in the lake to rest, eat, and enjoy the show like the rest of us.

I’m going to an Arts Exhibition opening this week where both artists and art patrons will be mingling. Since I have two of my paintings included in this exhibition, I always like to think about what to tell people if they ask me about my art in general. This painting is an example of what I love capturing in my art: light and color in nature. This is a park where I love to walk and was lucky enough to catch the sun just as it set this tree glowing with all the warmth and color we associate with Autumn.

Apples the Color of Fall

As a landscape artist, I so enjoy the long hours of light in the summer but I also love the colors of fall! The reds, oranges, and yellow-greens always seem to be a wonderful solace for the shorter days and longer nights.  I hope wherever you are, you’re enjoying the cool, crisp, and colorful days of autumn.

Welcome Color

Fall has come a little later than usual to the southeast. This luckily allowed us to still enjoy beautiful colors in the mountains even though we weren’t able to get away until late October. I could look out and paint these dazzling trees ablaze with fall colors; a welcome sight on a cold, wet, dreary day.

This is the companion painting to last week’s apple painting. I photographed these apples on a railing up in the mountains with a gorgeous southern sugar maple tree behind them. These trees turn bright yellow in the fall and this beautiful tree inspired me to paint the apples with a backdrop of a warm, cheerful, golden sky.

Finding Comfort

I’m finding comfort lately in focusing on the things that have not changed since the election on  Tuesday. I still have my wonderful family and friends, my students who give me hope every day that our future will be bright when they’re in charge, and the signs of fall all around me. We found these colorful apples on our way up to the north Georgia mountains and I couldn’t wait to paint them!
May you find comfort this weekend in the company of good friends and family, and in the delightful colors of autumn!

Hear the Woods Sing

Ever since I was a child I listened to the trees sing. Each tree sounded its different notes as the wind blew through its leaves. I would hide myself away deep within a grove of trees or climb high up upon the branches until I found the perfect perch. Ahhh, the joys of childhood, gorgeous views from on high with the music of nature in my ears.
