There are a lot of factors that influence what I paint but sometimes it’s as simple as I’m repeatedly drawn to a particular image. I’ve been focused on creating larger paintings lately and also on painting skies – particularly blue skies since we haven’t seen much of those during a week of rainy days. This was a scene that caught my eye when I was out west. I was by the shore, and saw all the gorgeous greenery covering this sandy cliff and the rather steep path winding down to a small beach below.  With the blue skies above and that beautiful turquoise sea below I had to paint this scene. When I look at this, I can still hear the call of gulls and the smell of salt in the cool breeze.

I love how beautifully clouds can sweep across the sky out west. I especially love how these dramatic dark and light clouds met in the middle….much the way I wish members of different ideological groups would. I wish we would listen to each other’s concerns and hopes and see the possibility of meeting in the middle.

I’m looking at lead gray skies with cold rain in the forecast so I wouldn’t mind being on a beach like this right now. I can feel the warm sun on my face and see the billowing clouds ahead and a sparkling turquoise sea on my right. Ahhhh, this is the way to celebrate January!

This is my first painting of the new year and not surprisingly, I chose one of my favorite painting subjects: a sky full of beautiful color and light. I wanted to convey my overall optimistic feelings about the new year in spite of some of the sad and terrible things happening in the world. May this new year bring peace, sufficient food, and safe shelter to those who need it the most.

Happy Weekend and Happy New Year!

On these bitter cold, now winter days, when the vibrant colors of fall have faded, I’m warmed by the sight of red flowers and green leaves. I was fortunate to be able to paint a small study of these beautiful flowers when staying on the west coast several years ago.  They didn’t look exactly like this (nature rarely arranges her flowers in perfect compositions) but with my photos and small study I was able to create this painting.

I hope you’re warmed by the company of those you love this weekend. To all who celebrate Christmas, Merry Christmas Weekend!

The trees where I live are almost bare now and I find myself longing for color in the landscape. Fortunately, I have lots of inspiration in my photographs of fall. This painting is based on photos taken during a weekend in the north Georgia mountains during peak apple season. I had a hard time deciding whether to feature the beautiful fall colors in the mountains or the gorgeous colors of the apples, so, I included both.
