            This painting is loosely based on a photo of a snowfall several years ago in the Atlanta area. Given that snow is not that common here in the south, we react differently from my northern family and friends.  We get out and enjoy the snow since everything shuts down at once. Everyone, including adults, grabs something that remotely resembles a sled (garbage can lids, trays, cardboard), finds a hill (plentiful here in the foothills of the Appalachians), and goes sledding.

It’s always hard to come home from an enjoyable vacation but sometimes you get a treat at the very end. Flying back from the scenic views, great hiking, and cool weather of the west coast back into the hot, sultry weather of Atlanta in July is never easy. However, on that evening, as we descended to Hartsfield-Jackson International airport, Atlanta treated us to a spectacular sunset, with the lights of the city below – a great welcome home!

               I love the poem by Mary Oliver, “In the Deep Fall” from which I borrowed the title of this painting. She writes:

 Don’t you imagine the leaves think how
comfortable it will be to touch
the earth instead of the
nothingness of air and the endless
freshets of wind? And don’t you think
the trees themselves, especially those with mossy,
warm caves, begin to think

of the birds that will come — six, a dozen — to sleep
inside their bodies? And don’t you hear
the goldenrod whispering goodbye,
the everlasting being crowned with the first
tuffets of snow? The pond
vanishes, and the white field over which
the fox runs so quickly brings out
its blue shadows. And the wind pumps its
bellows. And at evening especially,
the piled firewood shifts a little,
longing to be on its way.

             We don’t often get snow in the Atlanta area but in early December of 2017, we got a surprise snow fall and we all, kids and adults, went crazy over it. This is the fun of a snow fall in the south; it’s unusual enough that we take the time to fully appreciate it.

            This painting is based on a wonderful photo taken by my good friend, Ken Carter in a local park. The photo features a beautiful blue sky, glistening snow, and if you looked really carefully, this mother and child out enjoying an unexpected day in the park.
