I’ve always been fascinated by the solstice and when I read that the sunsets are longest on this special day, it started to make more sense. I found out that it actually takes more minutes for the body of the sun to sink below the horizon which means on the solstice, we have more time to enjoy all of the beautiful colors of a sunset. Of course that meant that I just had to create a longer than usual painting of a sunset on the solstice. Hope you enjoyed your solstice wherever you were.

As I write this it’s not quite officially summer but it’s beginning to feel like it already. There are longer hours of sunlight and today it’s sunny and warm with big fluffy clouds overhead. I love summer skies since there are usually full of interesting clouds that are both challenging and fun to paint.

It was a beautiful, peaceful evening in the month of June. There was time to enjoy the cool breeze from the water, the sound of the waves lapping gently at the rocks below, the taste of a delightful wine, and the sight of tiny ducklings being shepherded by their parents to safety for the night. To top it off, there were these glorious colors playing across the sky as the sun traveled towards the horizon. This is where I’d love to be right now!

Over the Hills and Far Away

It was a somewhat overcast day with only small glimpses of blue sky above on the popular Isle of Skye. For a landscape artist who loves painting skies, what’s not to like about a gorgeous island named “Skye?” However, the island’s name is apparently not a reference to the occasional beautiful skies but is thought to come from skitis, an early Celtic word for winged, possibly referring to how the islands peninsulas radiate from the Cuillin hills in the center of the island. On a drive one day, I was lucky enough to catch this image of these striking yellow flowers, called gorse, with the blue waters and green hills in the background.

In keeping with my plan to paint favorite places, this is Angel Island, off the coast of San Francisco. I was fortunate enough to have a conference in SF several years ago and in between meetings, we took a ferry out to this beautiful island to hike for several hours. Because it was a week day we had the island mostly to ourselves except for a group of school children. Once you leave the dock, you can easily get up to a ridge where you can hike around the island with gorgeous views of the water almost no matter where you walk. It was my idea of a perfect day: sunny with a cool breeze. I hope it will not be too long before I’m out here again….maybe this summer?

Normally, this time of year would find me traveling to a professional conference and I’m really missing that right now. I miss the fun of visiting Chicago, which is a city I love and is where my conference was meeting this year. So, since I’ve been missing traveling more than usual lately, I decided to create some of my favorite places via painting. Today’s painting is of one of my favorite beaches to visit on Wild Dunes near Charleston, South Carolina.
Happy Weekend and a Happy 1st Birthday to William Walden, my wonderful grandchild!
