             I have a friend and colleague, Joe, who is the envy of all of us with this beautiful view as his backyard. I’m still trying to figure out how he ever gets up the motivation to go into work every day. However, given how spectacularly he has done his very challenging job for decades, I’d say this is exactly the magnificent view that he deserves.

            One of my favorite songs is a Monty Python song, “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.” The lyrics are cheerful and silly and ridiculous as Monty Python songs tend to be, but they never fail to cheer me up.

             This has been a tough time for so many people I know these last several months and so in  typical Irish-American fashion I want to find humor somewhere and Monty Python is always a great source. I also am focusing on those things that cause a feeling of awe. For me, it is the sight of a beautiful sky, reminding me that not all is sad or ugly….especially if we can still laugh and revel in the beauty of a gorgeous sky.

       This was the eastern sky, reflecting the glory of the sunset in the west and illuminating these dancing clouds. It’s so amazing to me that these collections of water vapor can join together in such a graceful waltz across the sky…their last dance before it all begins again the next evening. But then it will be a different but equally beautiful and mysterious dance across the sky, leaving me wondering where the dancers go when the symphony stops.

            The dazzling colors in the sky that herald the setting of the sun never fail to amaze me. The colors change moment by moment, with some becoming more intense, then replaced by others, until gradually, sadly, they all fade away leaving you awed at the performance. It’s a glorious symphony of colors played silently across the sky, all for the benefit of anyone who takes the time to look up.

I grew up hearing songs from musicals…all musicals it seems. My Dad loved them and apparently so did our grade school choir director so I learned to sing many of the songs from these same musicals. One of my favorites is “Oh, what a beautiful morning” sung by Gordon MacRae in the musical, “Oklahoma”. It’s a wonderfully cheerful song and it seemed the perfect title for this sunrise painting.

By the way, as everyone who knows me will tell you, I’m not a morning person but I will get up right before dawn, anywhere in the world, to capture a beautiful sunrise. It’s always worth it and then I go back to sleep like the good night owl that I am.

I chose to paint this not only because sunsets are still beautiful in spite of the spread of the corona virus but also because it is such a peaceful scene…..something that’s welcome in the middle of stressful times. And I think those kayakers are maintaining social distance.

I have to give credit for today’s painting title to songwriters Bud DeSylva and Jerome Kern. The lyrics may be a little corny but nonetheless uplifting so I’m sharing them with you today.
