I'm reposting one of my favorite paintings today because I'm at my daughter's house eagerly awaiting the birth of her second child, my third granddaughter. Keep your fingers crossed that all goes well.

I enjoy painting flowers from time to time and try to make sure that I always have some in the house. The flowers I painted here are primarily delphiniums which as it turns out are associated with positivity, big-heartedness, cheerfulness, and love. So, today I’m sending some of these good feelings out into the world with the hope that it encourages all of us to be the best versions of ourselves as we interact with others.

Happy Weekend!

Spring has definitely arrived in the Atlanta area and everywhere I look, there are flowering shrubs and trees and lots of little bunnies. I know that many people suffer from allergies this time of year and I have to say I’m not immune. However, in spite of some allergy symptoms, I can’t help but be grateful for the longer days of light filled with the colors and fragrance of spring. This time of year, I’m surrounded by reminders to celebrate the new life all around us and that new beginnings are always possible.

Happy Weekend and to all my friends and family who celebrate Easter, Happy Easter!

I love this time of year when signs of new life are all around us. I can see hawks in my backyard busily feeding their young high up in a tree while flowering bushes and trees are everywhere I look in my neighborhood. Other birds are busily singing their spring songs which makes for wonderfully cheerful background music as I spend hours grading papers and writing letters of recommendation. Lately, when I walk or run late in the afternoon, I occasionally surprise a small bunny like this one which I can’t help but associate with Easter, though admittedly I’m more likely to think of the chocolate version and not the very adorable live version.

Given the recent holiday where sweets are often exchanged, I was drawn to painting this cupcake. This is one of a few cupcakes I bought at a bakery with the idea of using them for paintings. All I can say is that it’s fortunate that I took so many photos of these subjects because for some reason, they didn’t last long.

Hope your Valentine’s Day was sweet and that you have a Happy Weekend!

October in the southeast is a wonderful month! The mornings are cool and the days are sunny and dry. At the moment, I can hear the stream running gently over the rocks, the breeze rustling the leaves, and the birds chirping happily in the trees. It’s a time to think about heading to the mountains for a day, or a weekend, to forget about that constant stream of emails and tasks, and instead to enjoy this beautiful season of glorious colors….and candy. We can’t forget the Halloween candy.

            Happy Weekend!

I know Halloween is so different this year with either no or modified trick or treating but I couldn’t resist trying to get into the spirit a bit by painting some pumpkins. Thanks to photographer, J.E. Frantz for the use of her/his photograph.

Hope you have a very Happy Halloween!

I chose to paint this not only because sunsets are still beautiful in spite of the spread of the corona virus but also because it is such a peaceful scene…..something that’s welcome in the middle of stressful times. And I think those kayakers are maintaining social distance.

In these stressful COVID-19 times, I’m especially grateful for my family, friends, and colleagues even if I only see and hear them virtually via Zoom, Skype, etc. I know some of my friends and colleagues are working very long hours to make sure that we can continue to provide our classes  and services to our students, especially the ones facing difficult challenges.  You truly are the light in these rocky times.

The week has been filled with increasingly stressful talk and measures connected to the corona virus, COVID-19. While I have been paying careful attention to this as it impacts my job as a professor, I have been trying to maintain some degree of perspective. What I don’t want is for this understandably scary virus to be the only thing that I think about all day. So, I’ve been taking refuge in reminding myself of those things that endure. I’m remembering the hypnotic sounds of the waves and the smell of the salt in the air at a beach I visited recently. I’m focusing on the sound of the breeze blowing through my budding trees in the backyard and the melodic spring songs sung by the birds visiting my feeder. I am grateful for all of the beauty that nature presents at this time of year.

Happy Weekend!

It’s not surprising that I’ve been drawn to painting colorful sunsets and blue skies lately. We’ve had rain and grey skies for days and after a while we’re all longing for the sight of light and a blue sky.
Hope wherever you are, that your weekend is filled with light!

Several summers ago, we took a leisurely train trip up to Rochers-de-Naye, Switzerland.  This painting is of a view I photographed as we traveled to this absolutely gorgeous place. At the peak, which is 2000 metres (6,562 ft.) high, we looked at the various marmot species they have up there (a kind of small marmot zoo) and hiked in the cool, sunny weather. Although there were other people up there, it was a quiet, peaceful place.

I was in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago, walking down the street when this amazing window of beautifully colored cupcakes caught my eye. I didn't have my camera at the time but found time to go back later. I wanted to both sample the wares and take some pictures of this amazing store window. I think the staff thought I was a little crazy when I asked them if I could take photos of their window display so that I could paint their colorful cupcakes. However, it’s San Francisco so the staff just shrugged and said “Sure”.  They have about 30 or more different favors of cupcakes and I can tell you the cupcakes at CAKO are both beautiful and absolutely delicious!
