            I love painting water and mountains and I’m always excited if I find a scene where I can paint both. There’s something that’s endlessly fascinating to me about the contrast between the rugged rocks and the lush green that flourishes in spite of the challenging environment.

            It’s gotten warm and humid here in Georgia and although I’m appreciating the long hours of light, I’m already looking forward to cool breezes. This is exactly what we got when we stood on the banks of this fjord in Norway, with the wind driving small currents or ripples across the surface.  The water was a gorgeous turquoise color and with the dramatic peaks across the way, it was hard to leave this beautiful place.

            This is another painting that I did in the Tony Allain workshop and you may notice that the sky is uncharacteristically (at least for me) simple, an influence of Tony’s style.

Who Do You Think Lives Here?

             When I took the photo that I used as a reference for this painting I was so focused on the gorgeous light falling on the mountains that I didn’t notice until much later that someone lives in this beautiful hidden valley. I can’t help wondering who this person or people are. Are they sheepherders? Are they eking out a living on a small farm? What must it be like to live in this valley, far from any neighbors, surrounded by mountains when the winter snows come? I imagine that however lonely it might be, you would have the most amazing view of this beautiful valley hidden amongst these magnificent mountains.

            I hope wherever you are, you’re enjoying the beautiful light of these early September days.

            We all stood around the ferry railing eagerly snapping photos  nonstop of our gorgeous surroundings. I felt like a member of the fjord paparazzi – maybe I was even a little more obnoxious than the rest since I had not one but two cameras. I had my trusty Canon Rebel that I take everywhere as well as a newer Canon PowerShot that has a telescopic lens. We were on a fjord tour of Naeroyfjord and Sognefjord in Norway. Every time the ferry rounded a corner there were  more views of beautiful blue or green water and colorful cliff sides; I could see future paintings everywhere.

          I cannot believe that before our trip to Norway, I was concerned that maybe I wouldn’t get enough interesting photos or that one fjord would look like all the rest. As we drove from Bergen, Norway to Alesunde, I was struck with the unique beauty of each fjord. The color of the water was sometimes different shades of blue, sometimes a gorgeous emerald green, and sometimes it was several colors. Today’s painting is of a place near Loen, Norway where the water was green, turquoise, and then further out a more purple-blue. I’ve been having a wonderful time painting and trying to capture the beauty of this remarkable country.
