The Golden Hour

As an antidote to listening and reading too much about what’s happening to our federal programs, I chose to paint a tranquil scene. The light at this time of the evening is beautiful and is aptly referred to as the “golden hour.” The sand on the dunes starts to reflect the light and I can see pale pinks, turquoise, and blue. Ahhh, I can hear the sound of the surf now.

I’m back from a short visit to the beach and I already miss the rhythmic sound of the waves as I fall asleep. This is a small painting I did as I studied the dunes and the paths worn by eager beach lovers on their way to collect some sea shells, dip their toes into the still cold water, or go for a relaxing run – all things I did on my brief visit.

I’ve had a long fascination with tulips because at every stage of blooming, they offer us interesting colors, patterns, and shapes. The tulips I’ve painted in oils this week are at some of these different stages. I love the contrast between their vivid, saturated colors, and the grays and browns of everything outside.

Happy Weekend! Bring on Spring!

I’ve been thinking about spring lately and that brings to mind tulips – one of my favorite flowers. There are so many colors and even within one tulip, so many variations in colors. I’m traveling this week so I’m sharing some tulips I painted several years ago.

The more the news becomes distressing, the more I tend to escape to a place of peace and tranquility. Being by the ocean was always the place I ran to when I was young and my house was anything but peaceful. The rhythm of the waves has an almost hypnotic quality as the water comes in and goes out, always changing and yet the same.

Hope you’re able to find peace and tranquility and have a Happy Weekend!

Sweet Hearts

I’ve been thinking a lot about love lately – not only because of Valentine’s Day but also because of all that’s been going on in our country. I think this is a time to think of love as a choice that we can make – to love the stranger, the immigrant, the hungry, the unhoused, the one who is different from us. I struggle every day to not react with anger, hostility, or despair to the negative messages calling out to Americans to be the worst versions of ourselves. I think instead, I will focus on messages like these: Our strength is in our diversity and unity; Our superpower is our compassion; We choose kindness, inclusion, and equity, always; Service to others strengthens our community and our hearts. How about it? Think about showing up as the best version of yourself – the loving, kind, compassionate version of you.

Happy Weekend and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Love

“Love”          8” x 10”        Pastel        $160        © Sharon Lewis

Both in honor of Valentine’s Day and to push back on the divisive, demeaning, and insulting messages in the news and on social media, I choose to focus on love. This painting shows two Dads, one white, one black/Hispanic, with their family of kids. I wanted to put an image out into social media that is about kindness, love, and inclusivity.

Happy Weekend and Happy Almost Valentine’s Day!

Beach Dreams

  “Beach Dreams”       5” x 7”      Pastel      $105     © Sharon Lewis

On a rainy day in Georgia, I’m dreaming of someplace warm and sunny, where the only sounds I hear are the calls of gulls, the wind blowing through the sea grasses, and the rhythmic, relaxing sounds of the waves.

There’s something about waterfalls that both fascinates me and calms me as well. I find staring at the falling water somehow slows my breathing and I feel a sense of tranquility.

For many of us, this week has been anything but tranquil. We now have a new president, with changes that have angered and/or scared my students, colleagues, friends, and family. I offer this, as hope that in the midst of change both in our weather and in our political climate, it might offer you some tranquility.

            Happy Weekend!

I’ve mentioned before how much I love looking at and painting skies and as often as I paint them, you’d think I’d find them easy. Sometimes they are but more often I struggle to paint them in a way that fully conveys how gorgeous I find them. One of the times when they are especially gorgeous is that time in-between sunset and full night when the sky is often filled with this last, quick, intense display of beautiful light and color. Hope you enjoy!

The Party's Over

I know the holidays are over but I’m one of those people who would gladly leave the Christmas decorations up through February. They are such a wonderful contrast to the browns and grays I see outside my window. Unlike the majority of my friends and family who can’t wait to put everything away, I continue to get great joy looking at the bright red, green, blue, and gold decorations. I know the “party’s over” but I will enjoy these bright, cheerful colors just for a few more days.

            Happy Weekend!
