Winter Rose
I
discovered after doing some quick online research, that one of the names of the
poinsettia is “winter rose” which seems to be a perfect name for this brightly
colored plant whose leaves turn red in winter. It’s also a symbol of joy and
hope and love, three wonderful things to be reminded of on this, the longest
night of the year.

Storm-Tossed
Sometimes,
in spite of our best efforts, our lives can feel
like we’re floundering in storm-tossed seas. I’ve seen this recently in some of
my hard-working students. They’re dealing with the stress of final exams and
papers and projects due, and then a friend has a crisis. These kind students
drop everything to help and then find themselves overwhelmed with the
additional stress. Sometimes, we may be hardy souls, strong and courageous, but
we flounder and it is then that a lifeline tossed by friends, family, or a
mentor can make a difference. During these long, dark nights of winter, look
out for those floundering and toss them a lifeline in the form of a hug, smile,
or encouraging words.

One of
my favorite things is this view that I’ve painted so often on location in Maine. I
can remember the beautiful day that I painted this. It was a sunny day, with a
cool breeze, and huge clouds had scudded by leaving only these wispier ones remaining.
This is a wonderful summer location from which to paint and one that I’m happy
not to be visiting on this cold December day in the south.
I hope you
get an opportunity to enjoy some of your favorite things this weekend.
Happy Weekend!
