I’ve been thinking about transitions
lately. In a sad transition, this week we lost a beloved former chaplain at the
college where I work. He was an incredibly kind, funny, compassionate man with
a wide smile who hugged everyone he met. The number of happy or funny memories
that are being shared by his friends attest to the impact that he had on so
many people.
So Sammy, this post is in your honor….sending
you a hug and a big smile wherever you are now and for the rest of us, a
slightly modified excerpt from a poem by Henry Van Dyke:
“….Then, someone at my side says, 'There, he is
gone'
Gone where?
Gone from my sight. That is all.
Gone from my sight. That is all.
And, just at the moment when someone says,
'There, he is gone,'
there are other eyes watching him coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, 'Here he comes!'
And that is dying...”
there are other eyes watching him coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, 'Here he comes!'
And that is dying...”
