I’ve learned to appreciate the sometimes stark beauty of the wetlands in early spring. They are not yet the lush green they will become in the summer but are nonetheless beautiful to me with their sinuous, blue pathways of water. I’ve painted this small tree or large bush before, as it stands out above the low-growing marsh grasses. This time, I gave the tree some company, not too far away, standing patient watch (sentinel) over the wetlands.

When I travel, I always try to take some time to paint on location. It’s such a wonderful way to get to know your environment since you pay attention in ways that you might not normally. This painting was done at the beach recently where my attention was drawn to the softness of the grasses and the delicate hues I could see in the sand dunes. As my third painting of the dunes, you can tell that this beach trip made me a fan of this very vital part of the coastal ecosystem.

Happy Weekend!

Sometimes, I find beauty when I look where others don’t. In this case, everyone’s eyes were on the ocean which I love as well, but sometimes, maybe to be different or maybe because I’m curious? I want to look where others aren’t and ask what might I be missing? What beauty can be found over here? And that’s how I noticed these pink and lavender dunes with grasses of gold.

Hope you find beauty in unexpected places. Happy Weekend!

Sometimes, it’s the quiet scenes that draw my attention at the beach. I love the waves, the people with their colorful umbrellas, and the hopefully blue sky. However, I’m also drawn to the multitude of colors you can see in the dunes, especially with the beautiful shadows contrasting with the light. I also can’t forget that their job is to protect the coast from waves and offer some protection to wildlife.

I’ve been so excited about the thought of returning to the beach in a few days. I grew up near the water and have always loved falling asleep listening to the rhythmic sounds of the waves. I can’t wait to collect more seashells I don’t need and add hundreds more photos of the ocean to my current way-too-large collection. It never gets old!

When contemplating what title to give this painting, I couldn’t help but think of Greek myths involving apples. In particular, I thought of Paris taking on the foolhardy task of choosing the most beautiful goddess and handing a special apple to Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. The apple he handed her promised immortality and anyone who ate it would never be hungry, thirsty, or ill. Then there’s the Celtic mythology that associates three apples (symbols of immortality, power, and prosperity) with the very important god, Lugh. So, whatever apples make you think of, I hope you enjoy these very cheerful and colorful apples.

Whenever we get close to celebrating Valentine’s Day, I have this urge to paint food. I especially love painting cupcakes because I have a great excuse to buy them; it always helps to paint from life (or at least that’s my excuse). I also love to paint them because the ones I love to eat are colorful and have all these interesting textures to capture.

Hope you had a sweet Valentine’s Day and have a Happy Weekend!
