             The torrential rain we’ve had in recent weeks, with all the subsequent floods, has reminded me once again of the tremendous value of preserving wetlands. While walking through the park I visit every weekend, I noticed that the wetlands there now contained tons of happy, watery life. I could hear the cheerful chorusing of hundreds of frogs called spring peepers – a joyful sign that spring is coming soon.

            I’ve learned to appreciate the sometimes stark beauty of the wetlands in early spring. They are not yet the lush green they will become in the summer but are nonetheless beautiful to me with their sinuous, blue pathways of water. I’ve painted this small tree or large bush before, as it stands out above the low-growing marsh grasses. This time, I gave the tree some company, not too far away, standing patient watch (sentinel) over the wetlands.

             At first glance, coastal wetlands in early spring appear a rather boring brown or beige. It’s only after a closer look that you’re able to see all the beautiful colors of these marsh grasses. Wetlands provide such a helpful service to us all, sheltering wildlife and also helping to buffer the effects of storms. These are truly precious areas worth protecting.

            On this, the first sunny day after what seems like countless gray, rainy days, I want to celebrate blue skies!  This is a late summer sky, with the sun setting in a blaze of color over a beautiful marsh.

            It’s that time of year when I seem to spend far too much of my time evaluating others; my least favorite aspect of teaching. It’s also one of the most beautiful times of year, when I would most like to, as Wendell Berry wrote :

“…go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.” Ahhhh, maybe sometime soon?
