I love how
these homes are nestled into the trees lining the slopes of these mountains. A
reminder of our beautiful planet on Earth Day.

A colleague reminded me the other
day, “April is the cruelest month” and he wasn’t referring to the weather. This
is the time of year at most universities and colleges where students and
faculty are stressed with too much to do and not enough time to do it. No one
is at their best at this time of year.
And so, for all of my harried,
stressed out colleagues and students, I give you this quiet,
peaceful cove where you see the sun setting over the mountains, hear the
sounds of gulls, and feel the winds of night.
Happy Weekend!

Pretty in Pink

It had been a long hot drive in
Norway. Yes, it was hot. We came over during a summer that they were having
unseasonably warm weather which we were trying to escape. The Norwegians were ecstatic
and we were a little wilted. We arrived at this beautiful place to enjoy cool
breezes, the sight of the setting sun and these gorgeous, shimmering mountains.

Twilight River

It was just
a simple scene but I was fascinated by the ribbon of light shining on this river.
As the sun set, it silhouetted the clouds and the mountain in the distance, creating
this beautiful, peaceful end to the day.
The simple
beauty of this scene reminds me of a quote by the famous twentieth century American
Tonalist artist, Birge Harrison. When talking about why artists turn to nature
he says, “But precious beyond all other things, her exquisite and ever-varying effects
– that happen because of the change from night to day and from day to night
again – are spread out always before us, an endless feast of beauty for those
who have minds to see and minds to appreciate.”

Where Are You Going?

I have a fascination with paths, rivers, and streams.
Maybe I’m drawn to these pathways because I’m intensely curious about where
they go or maybe because they represent adventure or traveling which I love. Maybe
its because I’m usually looking forward, asking, in an almost naively
optimistic way, “What’s next? What’s up ahead?” Whatever the reason, I love to
paint meandering rivers and streams and pathways that go off into the distance
and of course, lead to a beautiful place….or at least they always do in my
imagination.

Irish Blessing

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day (and because I’m
Irish-American), I share some Irish blessings and wit with you:
May
the Irish hills caress you.
May her lakes and rivers bless you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.
May her lakes and rivers bless you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.
May brooks and trees and singing hills
Join in the chorus, too.
And every gentle wind that blows
Send happiness to you.
Join in the chorus, too.
And every gentle wind that blows
Send happiness to you.
There are only two kinds of people in the world, The Irish
And those who wish they were
May
those who love us love us.
And those that don't love us,
May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,
May he turn their ankles,
So we'll know them by their limping.
And those that don't love us,
May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,
May he turn their ankles,
So we'll know them by their limping.
May
you have food and raiment,
A soft pillow for your head,
May you be forty years in heaven
Before the devil knows you're dead.
A soft pillow for your head,
May you be forty years in heaven
Before the devil knows you're dead.
May
you have warm words on a cold evening,
A full moon on a dark night,
And the road downhill all the way to your door
A full moon on a dark night,
And the road downhill all the way to your door
The
reason the Irish are always fighting each other
Is they have no other worthy opponents.
Is they have no other worthy opponents.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
