I chose to paint this not only because sunsets are still beautiful in spite of the spread of the corona virus but also because it is such a peaceful scene…..something that’s welcome in the middle of stressful times. And I think those kayakers are maintaining social distance.

I have to give credit for today’s painting title to songwriters Bud DeSylva and Jerome Kern. The lyrics may be a little corny but nonetheless uplifting so I’m sharing them with you today. If you’d rather hear them sung I’ve included links to two versions, the first sung in the 20’s by Marilyn Miller and Alexander Gray and the second later in the 40’s by Judy Garland.

Look for The Silver Lining Lyrics
Look for the silver lining
Whenever a cloud appears in the blue
Remember, somewhere the sun is shining
And so the right thing to do is make it shine for you
A heart full of joy and gladness
Will always banish sadness and strife
So always look for the silver lining
And try to find the sunny side of life
A heart full of joy and gladness
Will always banish sadness and strife
So always look for the silver lining
And try to find the sunny side of life.

In these stressful COVID-19 times, I’m especially grateful for my family, friends, and colleagues even if I only see and hear them virtually via Zoom, Skype, etc. I know some of my friends and colleagues are working very long hours to make sure that we can continue to provide our classes  and services to our students, especially the ones facing difficult challenges.  You truly are the light in these rocky times.

I love painting skies! I think it’s because I love looking at beautiful skies, especially with colorful clouds, and want to keep that beauty in my life somehow. It always seems like there’s this fleeting moment where the sky is just glorious and then before you know it, the sun is down. This is where it comes in handy to be an artist because I can recreate that beauty again so that I can continue to enjoy it.
Hope you enjoy a happy weekend!

What Endures

The week has been filled with increasingly stressful talk and measures connected to the corona virus, COVID-19. While I have been paying careful attention to this as it impacts my job as a professor, I have been trying to maintain some degree of perspective. What I don’t want is for this understandably scary virus to be the only thing that I think about all day. So, I’ve been taking refuge in reminding myself of those things that endure. I’m remembering the hypnotic sounds of the waves and the smell of the salt in the air at a beach I visited recently. I’m focusing on the sound of the breeze blowing through my budding trees in the backyard and the melodic spring songs sung by the birds visiting my feeder. I am grateful for all of the beauty that nature presents at this time of year.

It was one of those beautiful, cool, breezy days at the beach in early spring. The day had been filled with sunshine, the sound of the surf, and the calls of the sea gulls soaring above. And then nature gave us one last show: a sky full of spectacular radiant color that set the sea and shore aglow. I can’t wait to see it again!

Several years ago, I was out in San Francisco for a conference and after meetings we headed out of the city to go hiking. On our way out, we passed by this courtyard with a huge, blooming bougainvillea, one of my favorite plants in the world. I’ve always loved the brilliant, hot pink color, a love I shared with my sister, Meg, and the plant reminds me of growing up in south Florida, where it’s common to see this beautiful plant blooming everywhere.
