              I took the reference photos for this painting, years ago…maybe as long as ten years ago, and I still find myself drawn to this image. I’m not sure if it’s because it evokes memories of a beautiful, cool, sunny, breezy, spring day on the New England coast or if it’s the image itself. There’s something intriguing about that house and I find myself fascinated by the pattern of dark trees and sunlit hillside. I would love to know what the view is like from that wonderful porch overlooking the water. I took the reference photos in the summer but I might have a different feeling about this place in the middle of winter when it’s most likely freezing cold and windy. Brrrrrr!

            I see this house as a patient sentinel, standing on the hillside, always watching and observing the changes of the seasons.

            It had been a monumentally frustrating day. I had downloaded the free Maverick Mac OS upgrade for my MacBook Pro and it was a disaster! The upgrade apparently decided that my hard drive was damaged and I spent the whole day trying to repair it. As I discovered later, I was not the only one who had this problem. Fortunately, I has backed everything up just a few days before. After about 8-9 hours, I gave up, erased my hard drive, and then restored it, which took about 4-5 hours. So, I decided it was late that I needed to paint.

            As I look at this painting while I’m writing this post, I realize that it perfectly represents that day.  The dark, stormy clouds represent the struggle I experienced most of the day and the glimpses of light in the sky remind me that brighter times lie ahead.

            Today is a beautiful day in the Atlanta area! We are experiencing our usual weird weather this time of year. Last week we had snow and ice, and this week we’ve had fog, mist and temperatures in the 70’s! Today is a little cooler (50’s) but nothing like the cold that friends and family up north are experiencing.

            On a happy note, I have noticed daffodils pushing up their yellow heads, a welcome cheery sight in an otherwise, brown and gray landscape. Speaking of cheery sights, I’m so in the mood for the beach! I want a view of warm, peach sand and cool blue water, so today, I’m posting a painting of a beach. This painting is of a beach from Tofino, which is on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.  It’s a beautiful place to walk and observe all sorts of amazingly colorful starfish and other assorted wildlife. Tofino has relatively warm winters and cool summers… just the kind of place I love to visit. However, although I found their cool summer temperatures a welcome respite from the heat of north Georgia in July, I believe I wore several layers of clothing every time I walked this beach.

So, as an artist, I changed the view to hopefully convey warmth and sunshine with an ocean breeze.

            We have been enjoying a few days of sunshine in the Atlanta region and the rain and clouds are moving in once again, just in time for the weekend. Excellent timing on the part of Mother Nature!

            Fortunately for me, I have a ready supply of sun and warmth in the form of paintings. This one is of the northern Oregon coast, which along with the northern California coast, provided us with gorgeous views of ocean and impressive rocks. I can look at this painting and remember the tang of the salt air, the gulls flying overhead, and the breezy, sunny day. Happy Weekend!
