I saw this
scene from the car as we reluctantly drove away from the Charleston area in the
fall. In spite of the grey day, there was this beautiful stream and just a hint
of color in the fields.

Look Both Ways

On a recent trip to the Big Sur area, we were lucky enough to stumble across an amazing restaurant perched on
a cliff side with the most gorgeous views of rocky promontories, windswept trees, and of
course the blue-green water below. It’s called the Rocky Point Restaurant.
The food is delicious, the service excellent, and after eating you can hike the
area around the restaurant. I must have taken hundreds of photos of this area
which I’ll be painting from for weeks! This painting is based on photos I took from
the parking lot when I looked away from the ocean. I did a bit of editing of
course but was pleasantly surprised to find this beautiful view from such a mundane
place as a parking lot. It reminds me to follow the advice parents give children to look both ways.

Harmony

With
so much ugliness in the news, I find myself drawn to painting peaceful scenes
that remind me of the beauty as well as the harmony that there is in the world. This
painting is based on some of my photos of a foggy coast with the only sounds that of
gulls, some small children laughing in the distance, and the rhythmic sound of
the waves. Ahhhhhh.

We saw a lot of fog and mist while we were in Oregon and California,
which made good photos a little challenging. However, I found out that all of
the fog and mist we saw each morning is how the redwoods get much of their moisture.
Given how amazing these majestic trees are, what’s a little fog and mist? Besides,
I think it lends an air of mystery to this painting I did of the beautiful
western coast of the US.

We were just in Trinidad a few days ago and so I thought
I would post a painting of this beautiful area. It’s a great place to hike
among giant redwoods, to spot seals sunning themselves on rocks, herds of elk
by the side of the road, and because there’s not as much light pollution,
thousands of stars at night. We will soon be back in hot and humid Atlanta and
these cool temps and beautiful sights will be only memories….or maybe
paintings.

Mountain Highway

I caught a
glimpse of this scene driving through Switzerland one summer. If only highways
were as scenic as this mountain path! Velvety green grass with gorgeous trees
and no billboards, loud sirens, crazy drivers, etc. Imagine stepping out of
your house and just walking on this beautiful slope. Ahhh…..summer is coming.

Apple Blossom Time

One of my
favorite signs of spring is when I see my apple tree covered with these beautiful,
fragrant flowers. Each year I tell myself I should paint them but this is also
when I am the busiest grading papers and final exams. By the time I’m through
grading, the blossoms are gone. So this year, I broke off two small branches,
placed them in water, and took some quick photos to paint from later. When I
needed a break from grading, I had fun painting these small but beautiful flowers.
Mother’s
Day and this week I am reminded of how lucky I am to have two amazing,
intelligent, and thoughtful kids. Today, my beautiful daughter, Erinn turns 26 having
just finished her second year of law school and then Thursday my handsome son,
Sean graduates with a Ph.D in Economics.
