After They've All Gone Home

This week’s painting is based on photos I took of a beautiful west coast beach near sunset. Most of the visitors had gone home and it looked lovely...very quiet and peaceful and maybe a little bit lonely. It reminds me of what a college campus looks after the semester ends. At that point, the students are gone, the campus is quiet and looks beautiful and peaceful....and just a little bit lonely waiting for our youngest inhabitants to return again.

This week I want to share an excerpt from a poem by Pablo Neruda that really fits what “The Path Forward” means to me. “You start dying slowly if you do not change your life when you are not satisfied with ....your love, if you do not risk what is safe for what is uncertain, if you do not go after a dream, if you do not allow yourself, at least once in your lifetime, to run away from sensible advice... This is my idea of great directions for a path forward!
Happy Weekend and to all my Jewish and Christian friends, Happy Passover and Happy Easter!

This painting goes out to all of my family and friends. Whether you’re battling your way through mountains of papers as I am or dealing with snow showers when you were hoping for April flowers, I hope this reminds you of what will come soon....sunny days, blue skies,  and time to enjoy the people we love.

Another view from one of my favorite places to visit, the beautiful state of Maine. It’s a windy, sunny, summer day with the wind blowing just enough to be perfect for those hoping for a great day sailing on the open water.

I decided to post this particular painting today because it seems to represent both the challenges that I see my students and colleagues trying to weather this time of year as well as the political news over the past week.  Fortunately, these challenges whether academic or political, will pass in time.
Hoping your weekend brings you peace and tranquility.

Wind's Up!

I love painting sailboats, the ocean, and a big sky full of interesting clouds! Sometimes, I get lucky and get to paint a scene with all three elements. This is what I saw when I was home in southern Florida recently. The water was a gorgeous color with dark turquoise blue further out and a wonderful greenish-blue closer to shore. The sky was full of these big clouds that arranged themselves into an interesting pattern and to top it all off, a striking sailboat with its sails catching the light as well as the wind.

I went home to southern Florida recently to visit family and friends and in between seeing people I love, I took some time to do what I love which is to walk on the beach of my childhood. Every time I was troubled or needed to think things through I came to the beach to walk by the water. The ocean manages to stay the same while always changing. It can be calming with the rhythmic ebb and flow of the waves or exciting as it mirrors the ferocity of faraway storms. No matter what, it never fails to enchant me and make me feel so fortunate to have grown up near this fascinating body of water.
