             I’ve been in love with the skies and meadows I’ve found in rural landscapes even if I prefer to always live within pizza delivery limits. However, there’s something so relaxing about looking at green meadows, sometimes with cattle grazing and those beautiful skies!

            Our long days of light are gradually getting shorter but it seems we’re getting compensated lately with some spectacular sunsets. No matter how many colorful sunsets I’ve observed, they never get old. They’re always different, always surprising me with yet another mix of beautiful colors. It’s nature, the ultimate artist creating yet another masterpiece. I owe credit to another artist, the poet, Walt Whitman, for the title of the painting, taken from his poem, “Song at Sunset.”

I borrowed the title of my painting from a poem of the same name by Henry Van Dyke. It talks of standing on a seashore like this and watching a ship sail off until she is out of sight. I’m thinking of my sister, Meg who passed from our sight this week. The poem continues in a happier tone:

             “And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
                         there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
                         ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

             And that is dying...”

            I’ve been craving warm greens and blues instead of the hundreds of variations of brown and grey that I see outside. I spent most of my childhood in southern Florida and took for granted that vivid colors would be all around all year long. Unfortunately, I don’t have many reference photos of landscapes from there and so, I chose to paint a beautiful day near the Isle of Palms in South Carolina.
