            As many of us face the new year with some trepidation, it helps me to look up and see the beauty and the light around us….whether I find it in a gorgeous sunset, in the kindness of family and friends,  or in the delight on a child’s face. All of these remind me to not lose my perspective nor my hope that what matters most will endure.

            If you  celebrate Christmas and you’re realizing as I do that it’s only 3 (Yikes!) days away, you might appreciate this painting of some tranquil water surrounding these “Christmas” trees in a small bit of Maine woods.

            I know at this time of year we’re often reminded not to focus on all of the material things. However, as I prepare for the upcoming holidays, I’ve been surrounded by brilliantly colored wrapping paper and bows, glittery ornaments and bells. As an artist, I’m delighting in all of the bright colors and with the happy music, I’m transported to my early childhood when magic was real and anything was possible.
            Hoping your weekend is filled with color and magic!

            With all of the stress I’m surrounded by…in my students as well as my colleagues, this just seems like a peaceful scene to contemplate. It’s probably exactly why I chose to paint this. It’s based on photos I took this summer when we were on the coast. After spending the day hiking in beautiful sunny, cool weather, we watched the sun set and the fog roll in with our glasses of wine. Ahhhhh, sounds wonderful right now.

It’s the crazy time of year again…when my students and my colleagues and I are stressed out with all of the end of semester work. This is quite possibly why I’ve been painting sailboats lately. They tend to remind me of one of my favorite poems, “Sea Fever” by John Masefield.
For all of my tired, hard-working friends and students, two stanzas from this poem:
I must down go to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way, where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

Happy Weekend!
