Pretty in Pink

“Pretty in Pink”       12” x 10”     Pastel      $240    © Sharon Lewis

Some anniversaries hit harder than others. This Thursday was the anniversary of losing my sister Meg AND it was the last day teaching my wonderful Oxford College of Emory University students. What connects these two events in my head is the difficulty of separating from people you love. I feel lucky that I had my wonderful, quirky, creative, amazing sister Meg in my life for as long as I did and I am also feeling so grateful to end this last semester of teaching with such smart, kind, thoughtful, and compassionate students.  So, although it is painful feeling the loss of my beloved sister and saying goodbye to students I’ve come to love, I hope I always find the courage to choose love and be grateful for its presence in my life.

            Happy Weekend!

Small Wonders II

“Small Wonders II”    8” x 10”     Pastel    SOLD    © Sharon Lewis

It’s that beautiful time of year where the promise of new life is everywhere – whether it be the nests I see perched in the branches around my house, the tiny buds emerging from the new greenery, or a friend expecting her first child. All this reminds me not to lose sight of the positive, beautiful things around me.

            Wishing you a Happy Spring/Passover/Easter!

On another beautiful day in April, 39 years ago, I gave birth to my first child, Sean. He has grown to be a very kind, smart, caring, compassionate person, a wonderful father to his two kids and a thoughtful, loving son. I am so lucky!

            Happy Weekend!

Today’s painting title is borrowed from the poem, When I am Among the Trees, by Mary Oliver, a poet I am grateful I found thanks to friends who shared her works with me.

Trying to summarize the sentiments expressed in this poem doesn’t do it justice, so for all who need a bit of comfort nowadays, here is the poem:

When I am Among the Trees – Mary Oliver

“When I am among the trees,

especially the willows and the honey locust,

equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,

they give off such hints of gladness.

I would almost say that they save me, and daily.

I am so distant from the hope of myself,

in which I have goodness, and discernment,

and never hurry through the world

but walk slowly, and bow often.

Around me the trees stir in their leaves

and call out, ‘Stay awhile.’

The light flows from their branches.

And they call again, ‘It’s simple,’ they say,

‘and you too have come

into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled

with light, and to shine.”

Happy Weekend and go easy, be filled with light, and shine!
