I’m normally a landscape artist but I have to admit I love painting still lifes on occasion. Sometimes it’s simply because I love painting with warm colors like these on a cold, grey, winter day.

What many non-artists don’t realize is that the challenges for still-life artists begin before they even start painting, with the choice of objects and how they will be arranged and lighted. I have tremendous respect for these artists, having watched some of the best ones, arranging and rearranging a set-up until it almost magically comes together in a beautiful design.

Happy Weekend!

Given the recent holiday where sweets are often exchanged, I was drawn to painting this cupcake. This is one of a few cupcakes I bought at a bakery with the idea of using them for paintings. All I can say is that it’s fortunate that I took so many photos of these subjects because for some reason, they didn’t last long.

Hope your Valentine’s Day was sweet and that you have a Happy Weekend!

Like many people, I find streams with waterfalls, even ones as small as these, mesmerizing, and beautiful. I grew up near an ocean so water that has movement has always been more appealing than still water even though lakes have their own special beauty. This painting is based on a place I visited one summer in New Hampshire where the water was delightfully cool, and welcome after a hike on a warm summer day.

Happy Weekend!

Sometimes I’m drawn to the play of light and shadow in nature. Light can create such interesting contrasts and the same colors can be almost magically transformed and brightened by light or dulled into some hard-to-recognize color in the shadows.

And sometimes, I just love looking at a scene like this, with the water flowing off into  distant, unknown realms and I imagine and wonder where it might lead me.

            Happy Weekend!
