In the Midst of Quiet Splendor

I love being in the woods! I’ve sought refuge in the shade of trees, in their branches, in their beauty, since I was a child. I’ve never seen woods as dark or scary….maybe those are my primate genes speaking to me, to come swing, hang out, play, hide, or just linger, smelling the fragrance of the earth beneath and the limbs above.

I painted this scene on location, standing in the midst of trees, listening to the birds calling and the wind blowing through the fall-painted leaves, and reveling in the quiet splendor of it all.

I got a chance to get away to the beach this past weekend. It was too cold for swimming but I didn’t care. It was wonderful to walk on a beach, smell the salt air, watch the tiny sandpipers dart back and forth, and try to forget about work for a little bit.

It was a little early for a lot of color but I found this one bright corner that popped with color and I had my painting.

I’m definitely not a “morning person” so you would think that I would have seen very few sunrises, but I’ve seen hundreds. Usually it’s because I’m in a different part of the world or region of the country with an interesting view out my window and I’m just intensely curious about how the early morning light will transform the scene. Or maybe it’s just that I could use a beautiful view like this to be willing to get up at 4:00am just to catch the first light.

That Shining Moment

I’ve painted this scene many times in many seasons. It’s a scene from Panola Park outside of Atlanta and has wonderful walking, running, and bike trails. There are also trails leading through the woods here where you can hear frogs mating in early spring or see hawks soaring above searching for prey. If you’re quiet you may even catch an occasional bunny munching her dinner alongside the trail.

The reference photo for this painting was taken after hiking on a cold fall day. We were facing the opposite direction watching the sun set over another large pond when I turned around and saw this perfect scene…that shining moment when the setting sun illuminates the trees and sets them all aglow.
