I’ve been practicing painting waves in anticipation of attending an international pastel conference (IAPS) where I hope to learn a lot from one of the best painters of the sea that I know, Jeanne Rosier Smith. I can’t wait to be surrounded by other artists for several days with our quirky way of viewing the world and our great passion for creating art! These are my people! Happy Weekend!

What drew me to paint this image from my recent trip were the contrasts. There was this very tranquil water contrasting with what appeared to be very dynamic clouds and the mostly white boats contrasting with the deep blues, turquoise, and greens of the water. It was a beautiful scene!

I was recently in Chicago for a conference and took a break from meetings to walk along Lake Michigan, along with hundreds of others out enjoying the sights and beautiful weather. I couldn’t help but notice these geese, most of whom were swimming leisurely along the shore, seemingly also doing a little sightseeing, watching all the people, dogs, and children go by….except for the small one in the distance who seemed to be complaining that the rest were swimming way too slowly and she was hungry.

This is one of my favorite places to catch the last of the day’s light. It’s a place on the west coast where the ocean has a kind of fierce beauty. These are rocky shores where the surf is often rough and yet the setting sun illuminates the water with the colors of the rainbow. It’s beautiful!
