These waters are humming or singing a sweet song, soothing to stressed spirits. I can hear my small, babbling brook and it reminds me to pay attention to what matters, what renews me….the sounds and sights of nature.

I love how these homes are nestled into the trees lining the slopes of these mountains. A reminder of our beautiful planet on Earth Day.

A colleague reminded me the other day, “April is the cruelest month” and he wasn’t referring to the weather. This is the time of year at most universities and colleges where students and faculty are stressed with too much to do and not enough time to do it. No one is at their best at this time of year.
And so, for all of my harried, stressed out colleagues and students, I give you this quiet, peaceful cove where you see the sun setting over the mountains, hear the sounds of gulls, and feel the winds of night.
Happy Weekend!
P.S. The title of this painting comes from the poem, "Sea Sunset" by Lucy Maud Montgomery

It had been a long hot drive in Norway. Yes, it was hot. We came over during a summer that they were having unseasonably warm weather which we were trying to escape. The Norwegians were ecstatic and we were a little wilted. We arrived at this beautiful place to enjoy cool breezes, the sight of the setting sun and these gorgeous, shimmering mountains.

Twilight River

It was just a simple scene but I was fascinated by the ribbon of light shining on this river. As the sun set, it silhouetted the clouds and the mountain in the distance, creating this beautiful, peaceful end to the day.
The simple beauty of this scene reminds me of a quote by the famous twentieth century American Tonalist artist, Birge Harrison. When talking about why artists turn to nature he says, “But precious beyond all other things, her exquisite and ever-varying effects – that happen because of the change from night to day and from day to night again – are spread out always before us, an endless feast of beauty for those who have minds to see and minds to appreciate.”
